چکیده

We study an extension of first-order logic that allows to express cardinality conditions in a similar way as SQL’s COUNT operator. The corresponding logic FOC(P) was introduced by Kuske and Schweikardt [16], who showed that query evaluation for this logic is fixedparameter tractable on classes of databases of bounded degree. In the present paper, we first show that the fixed-parameter tractability of FOC(P) cannot even be generalised to very simple classes of databases of unbounded degree such as unranked trees or strings with a linear order relation. Then we identify a fragment FOC1(P) of FOC(P) which is still sufficiently strong to express standard applications of SQL’s COUNT operator. Our main result shows that query evaluation for FOC1(P) is fixed-parameter tractable on nowhere dense classes of databases.

ROSIE: Runtime Optimization of SPARQL Queries Using Incremental Evaluation

Relational databases are wildly adopted in RDF (Resource Description Framework) data management. For efficient SPARQL query evaluation, the legacy query optimizer needs reconsiderations. One vital problem is how to tackle the suboptimal query plan caused by error-prone cardinality estimation. Consider the schema-free nature of RDF data and the Join-intensive characteristic of SPARQL query, dete...

Cardinality-aware and purely relational implementation of an XQuery processor

With the rapid growth in the use of XML documents as a universal format for storage and interchange of the data on the Web, several efforts have been made in order to develop efficient techniques for storing and querying XML data. Since XQuery is becoming the standard XML query language, significant effort has been made in developing efficient implementations of XQuery query processor. This the...

The Expressivity of Constraint Query Languages with Boolean Algebra Linear Cardinality Constraints

Constraint query languages with Boolean algebra linear cardinality constraints were introduced recently and shown to be evaluable using a quantifier elimination method in [22]. However, the expressive power of constraint query languages with linear cardinality constraints is still poorly understood in comparison with other cases of constraint query languages. This paper makes several contributi...

Adaptive Cardinality Estimation

In this paper we address cardinality estimation problem which is an important subproblem in query optimization. Query optimization is a part of every relational DBMS responsible for finding the best way of the execution for the given query. These ways are called plans. The execution time of different plans may differ by several orders, so query optimizer has a great influence on the whole DBMS ...

Effective Skyline Cardinality Estimation on Data Streams

In order to incorporate the skyline operator into the data stream engine, we need to address the problem of skyline cardinality estimation, which is very important for extending the query optimizer’s cost model to accommodate skyline queries. In this paper, we propose robust approaches for estimating the skyline cardinality over sliding windows in the stream environment. We first design an appr...
